  • Map: OS 1:25000 OL24
  • Time: Allow 3 hours.
  • Distance: 13km/8 miles
  • Ascent: 220m
  • Inset: The Eagle Stone and Gardom's Edge.

Classic circuit of three of the Peak District's most famous edges.

Park in the layby below The Grouse Inn at SK258779 or in the NT carpark a little further down the road.

Cross the road opposite The Grouse Inn and take the footpath a little further up. Cross the field, pass through a gate and take the well-used path on the right. At a path junction turn right and take either path as they curve left up to the end of White Edge. At another path junction turn right and follow the pleasant path along White Edge, passing a trig point en-route.

After about 3 km the path descends and at a signpost keep right down to a small stream. The path has recently been repaired and improved. Continue in the same direction to Curbar Gap car park where there is sometimes an excellent refreshment stop. Cross the small road and take the track on the left onto Baslow Edge. pass through a gate and after 50m take the path on the right which leads to a scenic viewpoint. Continue along the Edge, dodging in and out of boulders, spot the Eagle Stone down to the left where in the past young men were required to climb it to prove their manhood prior to marriage. Climbing grade is not that easy, about severe. The path curves left and at a track junction turn sharp right in the direction of Baslow. Wellington's monument is visible down the opposite track.

After 150m take the path on the right through an old quarry. The next section traverses below Baslow Edge so keep right, below the woods. There are ancient cup and ring marks hereabout, I know of two. Eventually the path passes through a gate then turns right through a narrow stone stile. Continue up to the road. Turn right and at the crest of the hill take the broad track on the left leading onto Curbar Edge.

The path is now obvious and runs along the top of Curbar and Froggatt Edges for about 4km. As the path loses height towards the A625 take the path on the right. Follow the road up to your starting point.

Points of interest: rocks, cup and rings, superb views.
